Newspaper Tower – Lead Yourself Into The Future Conference

Last Tuesday at the leadership conference a stand out activity for me was the newspaper tower, it required lots of teamwork and communication. The aim of the challenge was to build the highest newspaper tower, in teams,  by only using newspaper and sticky tape. We had 10 minutes to complete the challenge and there were 14 other teams. I think our group worked okay together but it could have been improved. Some people in the group were very helpful but slightly not inclusive while others sat back and didn’t do anything. I think I did a good balance of letting others have a go and being helpful. I think some people in our group need to work on their communication skills because they sometimes yelled. Our end result of the tower wasn’t that good, it didn’t stand by itself but we mostly communicated well which was most important. I think next time I can work on asking other people to let others have a go. What was your favourite part of the leadership conference?

Christmas Pavlova- Photo Spark

Below is a photo of a pavlova. A pavlova is an Australian dessert mainly eaten in Summer or on Christmas. A pavlova is a cake made of meringues, topped with cream and fruit. It is a very light and refreshing cake. Here is a link to a pavlova recipe:  https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/classic-pavlova/4c3584e2-822c-4e2f-940c-f9cbd2eb8502?r=recipes/pavlovarecipes&c=4418b6ad-e95f-4ebc-9b9f-db3244bd4e61/Pavlova%20recipes Pavlova is one of my favourite desserts!

Christmas

Every year my family and I celebrate Christmas. Christmas is always on the 25th of December. Every Christmas morning we open our presents. Later we get ready to go to my cousins house and we have lunch or dinner with my cousins. While we are there we all open our presents. Every year on the 1st of December we put up our Christmas tree. The traditional Christmas colours are red, green and gold but sometimes we use different colours. Christmas is my favourite celebration because we all come together and get presents. Usually Christmas is supposed to be a winter tradition and normally it snows out side, but since I live in Australia it is always hot on Christmas and we swim in the pool and have a barbecue. On Christmas some people wear Santa hats or reindeer antlers. Some Christmas foods are pudding, pork, ham, candy canes and heaps more! I really like candy canes! Christmas is about giving and being kind. Christmas is great! What is your favourite holiday?

5DF Toonallook Camp

This week our class, 5DF, went to Toonallook Camp. Toonallook is approximately 300km from Melbourne and it was a 4 hour bus ride. We stayed there for 4 days and 3 nights. This was the best camp of my life! We did amazing things such as bike riding, kayaking, fishing, games such as king ball and the shoe game, swimming and we even got to sleep in tents! We set up our own tents and we got to sit around the camp fire and play games! My highlight of camp was when we went kayaking. I was with Goldie in a kayak but at the start we were noobs and then we got better by the end. My other highlight was when we  had expo. Expo is where you sleep in a actual, tiny tents with 2 other people. It was really fun! We got to play empire around the camp fire and for dinner we had amazing burgers cooked by Mr Nichol!

On the first day we found out our cabins and we played photo rally. Photo rally was where we got a photo in a group of 2 or 3 then we had to go find that thing and we had to write down the code on it. I was with Goldie and Taylor. We came 2nd overall with 12 points! After that we learnt how to play king ball. King ball is like an oversized version of down ball with a few different rules! That was one of my highlights of camp! Later that night we had burritos for dinner. They were delicious! For dessert we had apple crumble. After dinner we played the shoe game. It was amazing and another highlight of camp! Later we went to bed. It was very cold in our cabins since there is no electricity. It is like just a wood frame and the doors were zip up doors. Day 1 was great!

On the second day we met the water police. We met them on a boat and we learnt about rules and safety of being on a boat. Everyone learnt so many new things! We also got to look around the boat and see the beds and the kitchen. I even got to to a real breath test on the police! It was really funny! Later we were split up into 2 groups; The Afterburners and Jazz’s Jellybeans. I was in The Afterburners. Firstly we went kayaking, it was so fun! I was with Goldie in a kayak and at the start we were trash but then we got better by the end. We kayaked to Point Turner. After kayaking we did bike riding. We rode to the beach. It was very hard because it was really sandy so we kept on getting stuck and swerving. It was really tiring but fun at the same time. After our activities we had to pack for Expo. Expo is where you sleep in a actual, tiny tent with 2 other people for 1 night! We had to pack up our stuff and load our bags onto the trailer. Expo was a 30 minute walk away – well not really. The teachers made us do a massive circle when we could of just walked for less than 2 minutes! When I asked one of the outdoor ed staff if it was a joke he said “It’s not a joke, it’s a circle!”

When we got there we set up our tents, it was really fun! Then we played empire and ate Mr Nichol’s delicious burgers! For dessert we had cupcakes and milo! Then we went to the beach to watch the sunrise it was beautiful! After that we went to bed we were all exhausted from a big day!

On the third day we went to Raymond island. The Afterburners went there on a boat. It was super fun! The boat was so scary and we started swerving everywhere! When we got to Paynesville (which is just opposite Raymond Island) we did fishing. We didn’t catch anything but it was nice sitting on the peer. Then we caught a ferry to Raymond Island. When we got across to Raymond Island we had lunch with the other group. We had sandwiches and we played on the playground, it was really fun! Then we went bike riding around Raymond Island. While we were bike riding we were also koala spotting. We spotted 32 koalas, they were so cute! We rode our bikes all around Raymond Island. After a while we stopped at a nice park. For afternoon tea we had fruit and biscuits they were delicious. We rode a little more then we stopped and got back on the ferry. Then we took a bus back to camp. Later we had dinner then we went to bed back in our normal cabins.

On the last day we had the Toona Challenge. We were in the teams from last time and we had an obstacle course on the beach. The Afterburners won that challenge then we had a bike riding competition. 2 people from each team had to do the slowest and fastest bike riding race. Afterburners won both. Then we had a puzzle and once again The Afterburners won. Overall the Afterburners won and we then played dead fish. I was really bad at it because I had heaps mozzie bites on me! Then sadly, we had to pack our things and go. Toonallook was an amazing camp and I’m very grateful for the experience. I will remember this forever!

My Cartoon Avatar

I made my cartoon avatar on cartoonify. It is a link on the internet. This is my avatar.

I choose long, brown hair because it looks like my hair.I choose brown eyes because they also look like mine. I also choose a light purple hoodie because I have a hoodie that colour at home. I used a light blue background because I like that colour. What does your avatar look like?

The Hard Road Ahead!

WOW! What an amazing experience! I have loved every part of the Year 5 ‘The Hard Road Ahead’ Integrated unit! It was been amazing! My highlight is definitely going to Sovereign Hill, I loved everything about it! I really enjoyed being with my friends, going to St Peter’s, learning facts about the 1850’s and being part of Sovereign Hill museum! I learnt so much new stuff while I was at Sovereign Hill from the Eureka stockade to that you should not marry a miner! I can’t believe how much I’ve learnt in a small amount of time! I have also really enjoyed making the dioramas because I liked using the hot glue gun and they were really fun to make. I have faced some challenges too. It has been challenging to keep up with the work in the class room because we have done so much work on it. When we were at school in Sovereign Hill it was very strange. We had to be told to do each thing, for example we weren’t allowed to open our book until the teacher said “Open your book.” which was hard to get used to. At school we did handwriting, maths, sewing and we learnt some general things. We also learnt that girls got married by 16 which was weird. It was a very good experience though and I learnt lots of new things from the school. For future Year 5’s I would tell them to make the most of their experience and try hard to learn lots of new things.

I have learnt so many new things! I have learnt about life in the 1850’s such as how boys and girls were treated differently. Men did all of the engineering, mining, banking, tinsmiths and doctors as for girls, they would just be at home sewing, cleaning, cooking and looking after the kids. I also learnt how diseases were common and you could easily die from them because they had no medicine and injections. Did you know if you had a disease in your leg or something they would just cut it off while you are fully awake with a saw or axe, I know, that’s disgusting! Everyone also  thought ladies should not marry a miner and did you know that most women had about 10 kids and that women got married before 16! Another weird thing was that girls would never run because it was unladylike! They were also very racist to the Chinese. I also learnt about businesses, here some businesses. Housemaid, tinsmith, teacher, banker, butcher, baker, miner, plumber, watch and clock maker, store attendant (at the criterion store, apothecaries hall, candle shop, grocers, confectionary store so on) candle maker, doctor and tailor. For our diorama square we did the Criterion Store. While we were at Sovereign Hill we had to go to that shop to ask questions and research about it. We learnt that the dresses were made to fit you. You wouldn’t go up to the rack and see what sizes they had, you would get it exactly to fit you so they were really expensive. Most women only had one dress because they were so expensive. The Criterion Store was one of the richest businesses. If women had lots of children they would buy the older ones dresses and they would hand them down the family to save their money. One of the main things we learnt about was the Eureka Stockade. The Eureka Stockade happened in Ballarat on the 3rd of December 1854. The diggers were fed up with the unreasonable licence fees. On the 30th of November 1854 all the miners came together to agree that ‘We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties!’ Then Peter Lalor brought the miners together and they came up with a plan – they weren’t going to pay license fees and make a stockade. At Eureka Stockade the miners came together to burn their gold licenses and defend their rights. On the 3rd of December 1854 all the miners made a ramshackle stockade where they stayed together and burnt their licenses. A day later the government troops stormed The stockade and the battle only lasted for 20 minutes. Over 30 men were killed and heaps of diggers got charged including Peter Lalor that lost an arm. Within a year the diggers won the vote and the licence fees were dropped. An important person that was part of the Eureka Stockade was Peter Lalor. He was a very important part of Australia’s history as he was the man that came up with the idea of the Eureka Stockade. Here are also some important dates of events that changed Australia. Melbourne was established on the 30th of August 1835, Gold was discovered near Ballarat on 21st – 24th of a August 1851, The agreement between the miners that ‘We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties!’ happened on the 30th of November 1854 and The Eureka Stockade occurred on the 3rd of December 1854.

At Sovereign Hill and during the diorama making I showed these PLA’S. I showed courage when I was speaking in front of the class at Sovereign Hill when I got asked a question. I also showed commitment because I even brought the diorama home to finish it, I also showed communication and collaboration when I made the diorama with my partner, I have showed knowledge with all of the facts I have learnt I showed curiosity because I have been very interested in this unit and I have been asking lots of questions, I showed kindness when I helped Goldie at camp when she was upset and I showed imagination when my partner and I came up with a design for the diorama.

In the real class I have also learnt more about location and maps from making the maps of our dioramas. I also have learnt about shapes and volume from when we planned our diorama. I also learnt how to do a narrative letter from when we had to send a letter to our Sovereign Hill teacher acting like we lived back in the 1850’s. We have also learnt about news paper articles because we made our own from the 1850’s. I have learnt heaps of new things about the 1850’s and things in the normal class room! This has been the best camp yet! What was your favourite part of Sovereign Hill?

Book Week Fun!

This term in library we have been scoring short listed information books for visuals, layout and information. The 6 books we judged were Bouncing Back, Make Believe, Our Birds, Sorry Day, The Happiness Box and Waves. All of these books were judged from the students in Year 4 – 6. The most popular book across Year 4 – 6 was Make Believe. Make Believe is a book with eye illusions and step by step how to draw illusions. My favourite book was Sorry Day because I really liked the illustrations and I learnt lots of new things from it. Sorry Day was about the Stolen Generation and about how aboriginal people used to be treated. Sorry Day was the winner of The Eve Pownall Award and Make Believe and The Happiness Box got honours. We also learned about the different types of non-fiction books. One of them is called a expository and the other one is called a narrative non fiction. The first one is a type of book that includes pop-up facts, often with pictures not illustrations, an index page and you don’t have to start at the start for it to make sense. The second one is a type of book that it is non-fiction but it is in a story format and you have to start from the start so it makes sense. I believe a good information book should include easy to read information or a easy to follow story line, realistic illustrations or pictures and good useful facts. What was your favourite book?

Sovereign Hill!

On Monday all of the Year 5 students all went to Sovereign Hill for our integrated unit “The Hard Road Head”. It was a 2 hour bus ride and we stayed there for 3 days. It was super fun! On Monday, before we got to Sovereign Hill, we went to the M.A.D.E Museum. At the M.A.D.E Museum we learnt about the Eureka Stockade, voting back in the 1850’s and we even got to see the real, original Eureka flag. It was very interesting and I learnt lots of new facts! Then we got back on the bus and went to Sovereign Hill. When we arrived at Sovereign Hill we all had lunch. After lunch we went into a gold mine, it was amazing! Then we went into a second gold mine and we even got to go in carts, it was so cool! After the gold mine we had free time to walk around and add things to our wish list of what we wanted to buy. Then we got to find out who was in our cabin, I got Goldie, Holly, Sylvie and Tori. It was the best cabin ever! Then we had time to hang in our cabins and get ready for dinner. For dinner we had chicken schnitzel with veggies but I didn’t like it because it had gravy on it. For desert we had chocolate brownies and they were amazing! Then we walked back to our cabins and went to bed.

On Tuesday we had to get up really early. We had to get up at 6:30am! Firstly we got dressed then we walked down to breakfast. It was really cold and we had to wear heaps of layers! For breakfast we all had cereal and chocolate milk. The chocolate milk tasted amazing! After breakfast we went back to our cabins to get our stuff ready before we went to school. Everyone was really excited and nervous about going to school! The school we went to was called St Peter’s Denominational School. Then we got dressed in our costumes! The costumes felt really weird! The girls had to wear a long dress with an apron and with a coat on top. We also had to wear these really weird pants called pantalets, they were really weird, I hated them. Then we walked to school. It was very strange because when we were walking to school we had to be in a girls line and a boys line in height order and weren’t allowed to speak. When we got to school we had to say our ‘daily prey’ which was a bit weird. Another thing I found strange that was we weren’t allowed to sit down until we were told to. First of all we did handwriting. Because I was a ‘Bub’ (one of the little kids) we did wrote in the sand trays. It was very interesting. Next we had morning recess. We were told which toys were for girls and which toys were for boys. For most of recess I played with the skipping rope with my friends. After recess we continued with handwriting but this time I got to use pencil and paper. It was super hard to write because my hands were so numb from being outside in the cold. After handwriting we did maths, we had to learn our 16 times tables. Then we were told that we had to memorise those times tables as our homework. After maths we had lunch. For lunch we went back to the cafe and I had a sausage roll, it was really yum! Then we got to go and look around for half an hour but we had to be back at school at exactly 1pm. At school after lunch, we do sewing. Ma’am taught all the girls to do cross stitching while the boys did engineering drawings. I think I was really good at doing the cross stitching. Then we had afternoon recess and we played with the skipping rope again. After lunch we continued on with our stitching then at 3pm school was over. We had to take off our costumes and get back into our normal clothes. Then we were allowed to go shopping. I bought raspberry drops, sour grape drops, soap, a candle, chocolate rubies and bath salts. After we went shopping I did research with Max for our diorama we will be doing in class. It was raining a lot and it was so windy and cold so we went back to our cabins. We had to clean our cabins because Mr Benwell was doing a room check. We also had to get ready for dinner and the sound and light show. Then we walked to dinner. For dinner we had pasta and salad and for desert we had white chocolate pudding. Then we went to the sound and light show. Firstly we were in a theatre and we got to wear 3D glasses. That part of the show was about how gold was created. The 3D affects were amazing! Then we went outside on a little train thing which brought us to the next place. We then watched a show about how the aborigines lives were changed when the gold rush occurred. Then the next part of the show (the main part) ewe watched a show about how the gold miners were fighting about the gold licenses and the Eureka Stockade. We also found out about how James Scobey was murdered outside the Eureka Hotel and how the miners burnt down the hotel. It was very interesting and I learnt heaps of new things. After the show we went back to our cabins and went straight to sleep.

On Wednesday we had to get up early because we had school again. We got up at 6:30am again and walked to breakfast. For breakfast we had toast, bacon, eggs and hash browns. After breakfast we got into our costumes again and we went to school. First of all we went to the Victoria Theatre because the whole class to sing a song. Then we had morning recess and I did skipping again. After recess we learnt how to write with the nib and ink. It was difficult at first but then I got used to it. It was really fun! Then we went to the Battery House. We got to see how the quarts got crushed. Then we learnt how gold was melted, it was amazing. Firstly they melted the gold at 1300 degrees! Then they took it out of the fire, it looked li,e lava when they poured it into the gold mould. Because it was so cold the gold went hard in less than 10 seconds! Then they put it in really cold water and in less than 30 seconds the gold was completely cold and touchable. It was so pretty and shiny! Then we had lunch back at the cafe. We had sandwiches, strawberry milk, popcorn and a mandarin. Then we went back to school. We continued on with our stitching from yesterday. Then the Vicar came, the Vicar is the person in charge of the school. We had to say our 16 times tables to the Vicar and Ma’am went through the list of people that have been bad. Goldie got in trouble for looking at the ragged boys, Tori got in trouble because her sister was 16 but not yet married, Lucas got in trouble because he doesn’t get beatings from his dad and Gus got in trouble for not putting in effort. It was really funny when they got in trouble! Ma’am even brought Gus outside and hit the whip against the wall while Gus was screaming so it sounded like he was getting whipped! We all laughed so much! Then we had to bring in our ‘school fee payment’ it was really funny because Ma’am got given 9 apple pies! At the end we got given question time to ask Ma’am whatever questions we wanted to! Then at 3pm, straight after school we got on the bus to go home! I was excited to go home and see my dog! I am really grateful that we got this experience and this has been my favourite camp so far!
